Player Ownership
Older players want guidance but make their own decisions. Let them help set the goals, and treat them like the leaders you want.
TIPS
SETUP
- The team writes its season goals and standards with you.
- Player leaders run the full warm-up and activation.
- Players choose the day’s main activity from a menu of two or three the coach prepares.
TRAINING
- Players lead position-group sessions and set-piece practice.
- Connect training to long-term goals: college, adult leagues, refereeing, coaching.
- Players plan and run a session for a younger AYSO team, which also ties into a youth coaching pathway.
BREAKS & HUDDLES
- A player facilitates part of each team meeting.
- Players manage their own training load and recovery.
GAME DAY
- Leaders run the pre-game talk, then the coach adds final points.
- Players hold each other accountable to the standards they set.
