Brandi Chastain may be best known for her championship game-winning penalty kick in the 1999 Women's World Cup at the Rose Bowl against China which led her to author the book, "It's Not About the Bra." After getting her soccer start in AYSO, Chastain went on to become the NCAA Player of the Year in 1990 at Santa Clara University, was on the 1991 and 1999 U.S. Women's World Cup teams, adding Olympic Gold in 1996 and 2004, with a silver finish in 2000. Chastain continues to support AYSO, most recently in the Caribbean by traveling there to do AYSO coach and player clinics and helping to raise funds for the local AYSO region to improve fields and facilities
Joy Fawcett has earned the title "The Ultimate Soccer Mom." During the late 1990's she coached the women's soccer team at UCLA, coached a youth team, played for the U.S. women's National Team – winning the World Championship in 1991 and 1999 as well as Olympic Gold in the 1996 and 2004 Games, with a silver in 2000 – while rearing two children, all at the same time! When being interviewed for an article in AYSO's quarterly magazine, she shared that she is especially proud of how AYSO has helped girls like herself in soccer. She and her husband Walt are writing a book directed at getting parents to understand how they can properly help their children to enjoy and grow through sport. Two of their children are currently playing in AYSO.
Julie Foudy got her soccer start in AYSO in the 1970's, with her resume today reading like a heroine's legend. Four-time NCAA All-American at Stanford University, member of the U.S. Women's World Cup Championship teams in 1991 and 1996 and Olympic Gold Medalist in 1996 and 2004 with a silver medal in 2000. When doing a recent interview, she was quoted as saying, "AYSO game me my first exposure to soccer – it was a stable, healthy environment with an organized platform to learn to play." Foudy served as the president of the Women's Sport Foundation, helping to advance women's opportunities in athletics and is launching her own Sports Leadership Academy to teach girls to be leaders on the field and in life, just as Julie has been.
